Day 5

Before to glue the braces, we mark the grain direction with an arrow to again spare some time during the carving process.

The fan brace and the closing bars are then glued on the go bar deck on a curved board to give the top the right shape. The go bars are curtain roads, two parts with a spring in the midle and rubber pieces on the edges.

The work on the neck begin. We plane the edges straight and square, draw a center line, the nut and 12th fret positions and the fingerboard outlines. We then plane a flat surface on the heel block.

The head venner is made from two pieces of maple book matched and three central venners. We glue the three parts with nails. The technique is to Hammer a couple of nails in a board with an angle, spaced out by the distance of the pieces we want to glue, place the pieces between and bend the nails in the opposit direction to create some pressure between the different pieces. We then clamp a block on the top to keep it flat. Again, to do not glue the head venner on the board we use there a sheet of newspaper between both.

The top bracings are carved during the afternoon. We make a slope on each edge keeping a more or less long high part in the midle. We then make a triangular shape with a chisel.

We finally reduce the high with a plane.

Before to glue the harmonic bar, we make the two bridges.

The harmonic and transverse brases are glued on a flat board with long reach clamps.

After cleaning, the head venner and heel block are glued at the same time. As we have a central veneer on the head plate, we have here to pay attention to line it up with the center line.

Bonus : a nice adjustable thicknessing jig.
